Chances for 2020 - Eagles Empty Chances for 2020 - Eagles

After years of relative success, the Eagles have lost that air of supremacy. Once that goes, it gets more and more difficult.

There's a big number of losses, but my analysis is that may not be as damaging as at first look. James Boyd and Scott Lewis, after stellar careers, were finding the speed of the game tougher and both spent time in the Reserves. Seb Guilhaus has been replaced, their draftees didn't play much, if any, senior footy and a host of fringe players have left.

The 'ins' however, are a bit sparse. The standout is the ruckman/forward Liam Buxton (formerly Liam Whale-Buxton), who is a quality VFL player. There may be a bit more speed through Pudney and Johannsen, while I've watched a fair bit of the Tasmanian, Rhyan Mansell and he's a tidy player.

There aor thereabouts for the Eagles for me, but lower edges of the five.

Seeing the reports of training could be a different eagles side this year .
There’s reports of the fittest eagles in 10 years but I bet every club says that .
With the loss of older players this could help younger players come through.
I saw it written somewhere the Eagles recruited players they need for 2020 not extra imports .

Reckon Eagles would consider 4th position as a very satisfactory result, if achieved, in 2020. We appear to have targeted our perennial weakness of lack of height up forward, plus another mobile tall defender and speed. Our midfield is the unknown and doubtful with Jordan Foote being our only A Class proven midfielder. Can Toumpas get over his injuries? Can Lonergan get fitter to give more run and spread? Can big improver Jack Firns rise another level? And can newcomers Pudney and McNeil add to the midfield? Can Petrenko add more consistency of his sometimes classy but short stints in the midfield?

Woodville-West Torrens premiership defender Luke Thompson has assumed the sole captaincy of the Eagles for the 2020 Statewide Super League season.
Sharing the prestigious role with fellow backman Pat Giuffreda since 2015, Thompson has been given the nod to toss the coin by new Eagles coach Jade Sheedy.
”Luke is an outstanding young man with a great passion for our football club,” Sheedy said.
”He is everything you like a leader to be on and off the field.”
The 29-year-old – who has played 161 Statewide Super League games for the Eagles since 2010 – will have the support of an emerging leader in Joseph Sinor as vice-captain.
Sinor, who began his junior career at Oval Avenue in 2010, will be part of a three-man leadership group which also includes strongly-built midfielder Jesse Lonergan as deputy vice-captain.
Lonergan, 25, has been quick to make his presence felt in gaining respect from his peers, having played just one season (2019) with the Eagles since being recruited from the Gold Coast Suns.
”Joseph and Jesse are strong leaders who have really impressed me since my arrival at the football club and will provide great support for Luke.” Sheedy said.

Good to know that Jesse Lonergan, being an interstater and who only signed because of his now departed Uncle Sam, has committed to and embraced the Eagles.
