The End of Football Park

Post by Admin on Sun Jan 07, 2018 11:59 pm

The home of SANFL from 1974 to 2013, as well as AFL from 1991 to 2013, demolition is commencing at Football Park this week. While some fans did not fully embrace the facility, there is no doubt of its significance in SA football history.

What are some of your favorite memories and moments of Football Park?

1976 GF and then 1974 GF (the first at the venue).

Didn't go much on 1978, 1983, 1998 or 2009 GFs.

76 is historic for the record sanfl crowd.
74 historic for being the first GF at the venue.
It looked pretty stark back then, with stuff all around the ground.

It was a concrete jungle as most of those stadiums are.

Oh well, progress I guess. RIP Footy Park.

it had unwarranted criticism in my book & was easier traffic wise (when leaving) than the Adelaide Stadium is now.....

RIP Football Park & the Adelaide Oval

Was great for its purpose and the centerpiece of a pretty awesome period for the SANFL. Had been neglected too long though and was behind the times for AFL fans who wanted the Gold Class theatre experience.

Would imagine supporters of all clubs have both dream and nightmare memories of various games or moments.

Running water to legends in a State of Orrigin match in 1996 (or 1997).

Was also there when the car bomb went off i n the early days.

Many varied memories of Football Park:

- Centrals decade of dominance in the 2000's saw many happy memories on 8 October's (and 1 September in 2000)
- The 'Dream' Showdown Final in 2005
- 2009 SANFL Finals Series. The Qualifying Final where you Centrals kicked 3 late goals to pinch the win. Then the last quarter of the 2nd Semi Final where Centrals came from nowhere to pinch the win. Throw in the Crows demolition of Essendon in the AFL Elimination Final it was a very exciting time finals wise that year.
- 1999 International Rules Series. 45,000 packed in, and the near-riot after the game as the crowd flooded the oval and both crossbars were busted.
- Adelaide v St Kilda in 2010, when the likes of Burton, Goodwin and McLeod had their farewell lap post-game.

It's legacy, I hope, will last for generations to come - in that it ensured football wouldn't play 2nd fiddle to cricket, and ultimately returned to Adelaide Oval as an equal to the SACA.

The loss of Football Park is a nail in the SANFL's coffin. The SANFL has lost its autonomy and eventually its total income stream.

3  Eagles premierships great, and a heap of losses to Centrals a downer. It was a long treck from TT Gully though to get to it.

Won't ever see a side as devastating as West's 83' outfit in SA again, and in my time, they standalone on that front.

Sturt's 83 side was a pretty handy outfit too. That they were 5 goals short, says how good West's side was.

Totally agree Chambo, no other side would have gotten within 10 goals of West that year imho
