SMITHSON WINS 2017 TORRENS UNI CUP MVP AWARD

SANFL would like to congratulate West Adelaide’s Josh Smithson for winning the 2017 Torrens University Cup MVP Award.

Averaging 24 disposals and two goals per game, Smithson is the first Bloods player
since Ryan Dijksman in 2012 to win the coveted trophy.

Originally from the Karoonda Football Club, the 18-year-old played a total of 14 U18 Torrens Uni Cup matches this year while also representing South Australia at the Under-18 AFL National Championships.

The goal kicking midfielder earned his Torrens Uni Cup MVP nomination after racking up 33 disposals, 10 clearances and three goals against Glenelg in Round 7.

Introduced in 2009, the MVP Award is presented to the best performing player in the Under-18 Torrens Uni Cup Competition.

One player is nominated for the Award each round throughout the home-and-away season, with the overall winner selected by a panel of judges chaired by SANFL Talent Manager Brenton Phillips.

Courtesy of Torrens University, Smithson receives $1000 and a trophy.

Is there two different awards at Under 18 level because the Tomkins/McCallum Medal was won by Boyd Woodcock of North Adelaide.
Congratulations to Boyd on winning this prestigious and time honoured award.

Yeah the Tomkins/McCallum Medal is voted by the umpires whereas the MVP is decided by Stix Phillips essentially.

Don't see the point in having two. Similar sort of concept to the SANFL Star Search of AFL Rising Star, except there's no age or games basis so it's essentially the same thing as the Tomkins/McCallum Medal.

Congrats to both lads. Smithson was runner up in the Medal voting anyway.
