They're Baaaaack.........well maybe!

Post by Chambo Off To Work We Go on Mon Aug 14, 2017 9:24 pm

No not the Poltergeists. Players in the AFL system that are a chance to return to the SANFL.

Player     -   From Club  -   To ?

Scott Thompon Adelaide -  WWT Eagles
Announced retirement. Mid-30s. May just pull up stumps full stop.
Maybe coaching beckons?

Danyle Pearce Fremantle - Sturt
Wrong side of 30. Been in and out of Docker side. A chance to come back?

Sam Day Gold Coast - Sturt
Bad run with injuries over 5 seasons and done for the season. Must be running out of credits.

Shaun Burgoyne Hawthorn - Port
Almost best form of his career. Will he go on at the Hawks? Any chance to return?
Like Thompson maybe a coaching career beckons.

Jack Trengove Melbourne - Sturt
Lost 2 years of footy to injury and on the outer at the Demons. May be a trade prospect.
They say he has lost a yard since the foot injury. But would be welcomed back to the Blues with open arms.

Lindsay Thomas Nth Melbourne - Port
Pushing 30 next year and had some form and MRP troubles. A maybe?

Angus Monfries Port - Sturt
Looks unlikely to go around again. 1 game for the year. Tradebait or a Blues possible?

Jimmy Toumpas Port - WWT Eagles
Second club. Out of favour. Back to the Eags?

Brett Eddy Port - South
Probably win the Ken Farmer medal. Do Port keep him round or let him go?

Jarrod Lienert Port - Sturt
Same as Eddy. Doesn't look like cracking it as a mature age rookie.

Jonathon Giles WC Eagles - Sturt
Big Jono is nearly 30, been to 4 clubs and other talls ahead of him in Natanui & Lycett.

Any others?

Looked likely that Malcom Karpany back to Eagles from WC Eagles but he seems to have established himself of late.

Cam Sutcliff from Dockers back to Eagles would have to be a chance

Gus only lives 500m from Coopers Stadium.

Convenience and coin might see the Legs making a play for him?

Big Phil if Sam Butler is delisted by West Coast do you reckon he may return to Centrals.

Suspect the Legs might have someone else in mind for a similar type of role

Trengove has been delisted by the Demons.
Has barely been on an AFL park for 3 years.
It is hard to much interest eventuating from other clubs.

I am hopeful he comes back and plays with the Blues again.

given what his sister just said in her snippet on the Magarey Medal telecast, he'd be at Sturt as his & the families heart is there...........off course the old salary cap could be a stumbling block

There is absolutely no possible way that Sturt, Norwood or WWT could possibly afford yet another ex AFL player and still comply with the Salary cap.
The presumption that ex AFL players return to their original club for"love of the jumper" is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Ex Afl players of any sort of standing shop themselves around to the highest bidder and usually dont come any cheaper than 40k/ year.
Do the Math! on the aforementioned clubs - and you come to the conclusion that there are a lot of brown paper bags placed in letterboxes or there are more than half the playing group playing for nothing. rant over.

Agree with that. Given South are on a reduced salary cap, will they be able to afford Keegan Brooksby?

a) Ridiculous to say such a thing before departures are announced
b) Not many getting $40k these days
c) Brent Tuckey took all the Brown paper bags with him didn't he?

a. Im saying it based on current arrangements.
b. Well a club I know have made bids on players who "shop themselves around" and cant get within a bulls roar of what they are offered elsewhere!
c. Brent Tuckey... well theres a blast from the past!!!!!! -what was that- 15 years ago..? - did the crime and paid the price at the time.
Unlike another club who overnight altered their vote on the introduction of AFL reserves sides into the competition in order to reduce their sanctions....

Would the dollars of ex-AFL players be based on how many games they played and I suppose whether they had cemented themselves in that system?

I am not sure how this works in practice when they come back.

Riley, Battersby, Colohoun never really got much of a toehold at their respective afl clubs.

I guess Grigg, Brooksby didn't either.

Whereas say a Monfries is a bit different in that respect. But he is older too.

Is there a difference in how they negotiate with sanfl clubs and the expectation of the dollars?

No this is how it works..
It is clear for everyone to see who I support..therefore I'm a soft target.
Perhaps you should publicly declare your allegance instead of hiding behind an avatar like a spineless jellyfish.

As far as paper bags go, if we lived by the adage "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", Norwood would not be casting the first stone.
