Ben, I'm sorry but I think they're really weak arguments. Grand Final attendances are hardly the definitive measurement of the strength of a competition, but if you want to go there: - The first SANFL Grand Final played after the introduction of the Crows to the AFL was, I think, the West v North bloodbath which attracted 39,000 fans. The last two have attracted 36 and 38,000.

And as for the Foxtel Cup - if/when clubs did genuinely pick under-strength sides, wasn't it because they didn't want to hurt their chances of winning the SANFL premiership? i.e. they were showing the regard they still hold for the SANFL Premiership over the lure of cash. I would have thought that runs counter to your argument.

if the 4,000 ''promised'' crow supporters turned up it'd be ok, i know people & plenty of them who have turned their back on the league & as we know once you lose patrons it is very hard to win them back, i couldn't quite do the same when it came crunch time but i understand & admire the people who made their stance & against the bulldozing that occurred

This is a serious reduction this season.
The sanfl should be worried.

it would be foolish to assume this is just a one season blip.

From my perspective, i think the sanfl has become complacent.

And the numbers of disenchanted long time supporters cannot be underestimated.

So what is their game plan to combat this trend?

One of the main reasons for allowing the Reserves teams in, cited by some who voted for it, was the concern that if they set up in some other (e.g. amateur) competition, interest in the SANFL and its relevance would both diminish. The opposite seems to be true. It's their inclusion that has caused the damage, delivering us the worst crowd figures in 20 years.

The 1071 is the lowest ever crowd at Woodville Oval; record before was Rd 19 2008

The 1536 at Alberton is the lowest ever crowd there apart from a couple of estimated attendances in 1903 and 1945; record before was 1,777 for Port vs Glenelg, Rd 15 2002; Port vs Central was some 1011 more in Rd 17 2012

The 1134 is the lowest attendance at Prospect between North and Glenelg, apart from three estimated figures and the 2nd lowest overall behind 1122 in Round 20 2010

The 1534 at Richmond is the lowest attendance between West and Sturt; previous lowest was 1536 in Round 17 1993

There have only been six lower attendances at Norwood; four of them were estimated attendances.

Over the past 5 weeks (or 21 matches), four of those have been above 2000:

Rd 13: 2,163 Norwood vs Port @ Norwood
Rd 14: 2,272 Eagles vs Port @ Woodville
Rd 15: 2,581 Glenelg vs Eagles @ Glenelg
Rd 15: 2,440 Sturt vs Port @ Unley

And the top two as previously been pointed out were lowest crowds between the clubs at that venue.

4,679 today is the highest crowd at Woodville since Round 21 2000 - 4,707 vs Port
It is only the 5th attendance above 4000 this season; last year there were 10; 8 the year before.
That often quoted 4000 figure has now been exceeded twice this year with matches involving Adelaide; 4864 at Alberton is the other.
