is Glenelg fit enough ?

Post by bayman on Sat Apr 11, 2015 5:44 pm

after watching Glenelgs' first two games this season, i really believe the team has improved markedly in ability but looks to me to be lacking in stamina & fitness, today Sturt ran out the game while we seem to be running up & down in the one spot during the final term, how can other teams (two, plus Port which will obviously be fitter) be that much fitter than our team ?

Whether it was fitness as such is hard to say. Glenelg players put a huge physical effort into the 3rd quarter. They came out after half time 17 points down, and they attacked the game like there was no tomorrow. Their 6.2 was a good reward for effort, but they couldn't break the game open and get a lead for the run home. Consequently when Sturt got 2 goals within the first 3 minutes of the last quarter, it set Glenelg back to almost where they'd been at half time. Although Alleway got one back a few minutes later, the momentum in the game had swung Sturt's way. Towards the end there were a lot of tired players on both sides, and it was a couple of individual efforts from players like Kirkwood and Coad that sealed the issue.

cc, they coughed up a 19 point lead last week as well, that is why i think fitness could be an issue, can not question their commitment though

Yeah obviously you know your team better than I do. They certainly dropped right out of it in the last quarter, but they played some impressive football at times. I think they're on the right track, they were very strong and determined around the stoppages. Commitment was good as you said, probably need more scoring options. Alleway kicked 6 goals, but he was a lone hand on the forward line.

The fade outs might have been worse but for accurate kicking by Glenelg in the last halfs

2ND HALFS 2015
GL 4-1
SA 9-10

ST 8-7
GL 7-2

SECOND HALFS BOTH MATCHES
11-3 Glenelg
17-17 South and Sturt

LAST QUARTERS BOTH MATCHES
3-0 Glenelg
8-9 South + Sturt

Last quarters are a worry

The AFL reserves teams in theory should be fitter than the SANFL teams in the early rounds ?

Adelaide Crows Reserves and Port Power Reserves have the advantage of players participating in AFL pre -season preparations
Port Power Reserves started very well last SANFL season , but by seasons end it appeared the SANFL clubs caught up on fitness

Not sure about fitness, but there were quite a few very basic skill / decision making errors from both sides.

After 5 games Glenelg have not won a 2nd half on the scoreboard

GL 4-0
SA 9-10

ST 8-7
GL 7-2

GL 4-6
CD 5-3

GL 3-3
AC 4-3

NW 8-7
GL 5-5

23-16 GLENELG
34-30 OTHERS

The ''fade'' out against Adelaide was a concern
That was the drawn game
Perhaps the early finish saved Glenelg ?
3/4 time
GL 7-9
AC 4-7
When this match was called off into the last quarter
GL 7-9
AC 7-9

Ive only seen Glenelg twice, v Sturt and v Norwood. Might be they aren't fit enough, but in those games you could also argue they spent a lot of petrol tickets trying to recover from early deficits. Last year (or perhaps the one before, I forget) I think there were legitimate questions over their conditioning and the shape in which some of their players presented. But I didn't see anything last night to suggest they weren't physically fit enough.

i thought when i initially asked the question that fitness could have or in fact was questionable, but after the Central match i'd suggest 10 scoring shots in the last quarter put that to bed, i thought Glenelgs' tackling & pressure was first class last night & while Norwood was always 4 or 5 goals up for most of the night i think we gave them a little scare & indeed Norwood only really ''got away'' in the last 10 minutes or so

Maybe mental fitness or concentration comes into it too and not just physically.

I would think clubs would be doing very similar things on the physical fitness front.

That was a question I was alluding to aswell Chambo.

Bayman - As improved as the Bays showing was last night, I dont think there was any real scare. Always felt as though Norwood were keeping them at an arms length.

yeah, your probably right, i was just going on the comments made by a couple of Norwood supporters in the grandstand, they were definitely getting towey late in the third quarter

Hey Bayman,

Now that we are 5 weeks in, how do you think Lokan is going?

Obviously results not going the way he wants, and I am not sure how he rates his list, but do you think he has settled into the role and making his mark to improve them?

I think the team is basically one tall forward short, & the defence overall is a bit short, however as a coach, well he definitely has them playing for each other, the morale is great & tactically the moves & teams he's picked each week you couldn't say were wrong, already he is better than a couple of our coaches we've had this century

Then you would think the results will come eventually.

Similar to Seamus at Sturt. First 2 years in the wilderness and they are playing a much more cohesive brand of footy the last 2.

That seems right to me based on the limited times Ive seen the Bays. I don't think Win/Loss is the be all and end all for the Bays this year, gotta crawl before you can walk. Get the systems, structures and procedures bedded down and then the results will take care of themselves.

What a turnaround
We highlighted the Glenelg fade outs in 2015 in this thread
Glenelg have had some brilliant last quarters in 3 of 4 games this 2017  season

GLENELG LAST QUARTER  WINS 2015-2017
2015 WON 5
2016 WON 9
2017 WON 3 OF 4
* Please note some games may have been breeze affected
* Please note my stats may or not be 100% accurate

Last quarter efforts in 2017
GL 3-3
PA 4-3

GL 7-1
ST 2-1

SA 0-2
GL 6-1

GL 5-2
CD 1-1

2017 TOTAL
GL ........21-7
OTHERS..7-7

The last 3 matches
GL........ 18-3
OTHERS...3-4

This is a BIG  BIG turnaround so far when in particular comparing 2015 and 2017

Are there reasons for this massive 'current' transformation ?

Quickly stashes the package received from a Mr Dank

Combination of factors.
Fitness was a real focus of the pre-season. I think the big difference is that our core group of players are now a couple of years older and stronger so we have a good group in the mid-twenties. They are stronger and have a bigger tank then teenagers so not only can they run longer, the physical side of the game doesn't bag them around as much.
We also have some faster players such as the 2 Milera's, Barry, Nicholson has stepped up which means the opposition spends more gas chasing.

Our last quarters have been fantastic, we just need to work on our third quarters now.
