As promised.

FERRIS BUELLER's DAY OFF 9.5 (1986)

9 Matthew Broderick - hasn't come close to this since.
9 Mia Sara - Absolutely smouldered
8.5 Alan Ruck - Almost the quintessential "neurotic nerd" performance
8.5 Jennifer Grey - The feisty sister

These teen flicks were hugely popular in the 1980s, with a bevy of them including;
- The Breakfast Club
- Pretty in Pink
- Sixteen Candles
- St Elmo's Fire

Many of these were cut under the hand of the late director, John Hughes. The genre has come under quite a bit of criticism over the years, but I think this is probably unjustified.

However Bueller has gained a cult status amongst that genre of movies and still ranks as a gem that has stood the test of time.

A kid wags a day off school and half the town knows that he's sick, possibly dying.
In reality he just wants to hang out with his girlfriend and best friend doing his own version of a cool excursion to the city to have fun in a 1961 250GT vintage red Ferrari.

Cameron: "My father loves this car more than life itself"
Ferris: "Che Bella"

Is it feasible to fit in Trips to Sears Tower, Baseball games, Art Galleries, Parades, crashing lunch engagements at exclusive restaurants, hanging out by the pool all within a standard school day? I think Ferris can probably even bend time. You get the gen.

If anyone can make mincemeat of the School Principal like Ferris, then they don't need to be at school.

I think the "Twist and Shout" Scene is my favourite, where Ferris mimes to the Beatles Classic after hijacking the Parade float with half of Chicago boogying along.

The whole thing is so daringly ridiculous it is very funny.

Some movies just push my buttons and this is one of them - had to buy it on DVD for posterity.

Save Ferris - yeah the kids even took up a collection for him.

A classic.

Hey Chambo, one of my favourites of the time was "Better Off Dead" with John Cusack... There's a scene in it where Cusack is contemplating suicide and falls off the bridge but lands in the top of a garbage truck.. He's sitting in the top looking dejected as the truck drives past two african american guys working up in a cherry picker- one of them looks at the other and says "It's a damn shame, folks throwin out a perfectly good white boy like that"...

bhahahahaha.. cracks me up every time. There are other great quotes all through the movie.

9.3 LAY THE FAVORITE [2012]
9 Rebecca Hall
8 Bruce Willis
7 Catherine Zeta Jones
5 Vince Vaughn

Based on a true story
Rebecca Hall goes from stripping in her locality to Las Vegas to broaden her horizons
She ends up working for a mad punter , Bruce yeah yeah Willis
She is welcomed into the fast moving hectic world of Sports Gambling
She goes from Bimbo to Jumbo
She climbs the ladder to success , but does not actually meet Ces.

REBECCA HALL 9
First time I've seen her
Plays a vibrant bubbly exciting part , and plays it exceptionally well
She has that Jessica Biel look about her, say no more, as we know how stunning Biel is

BRUCE WILLIS 8
Thought I was looking at myself at times
Sports punting extraordinaire , excitement plus in his part
Bruce looks the part as a gambler

CATHERINE ZETA JONES 7
Didn't know it was her until after it finished
Bruce's moody wife
She looked good for middle aged woman

VINCE VAUGHN 5
Also a high profile gambler
Didn't warm to his part
He was so much better in movie Delivery Man
Had a namesake Vince Colosimo hairdo look about him

If your a punter, you can really really relate to the gambling aspect , kind of a compulsive must see movie
For anyone else, probably a 7.5 rating . might be worth a gawk
As for me, loved it

Adorable girlfriend of Broderick

Me thinks  If you see this film you wont be disappointed

5.5 THE ARTIST [2011]
8 Berenice Bejo
6 Jean Dujardin
7 John Goodman

It starts of as a type of spin off from the silent movie days
After about 15 minutes I realised something
The movie is a complete silent movie made in 2011 !
Starts off in 1927 and keeps going into the 1930's
Swanky times the roaring twenties , jazz , honky tonk, Don Bradman, Charlie Mcartney
The end of WW1 perhaps spurned the terrific twenties, people had time to enjoy planes, cars, silent movies , it must have been an exciting time to be a human being
What happened in that time was the transition from silent movies to talkies

George [Dujardin] was the silent movie superstar
Peppy [Bejo] was a delicious dame with that bubbly appearance who was a nothing
Talkies changed the landscape , George became vulnerable
Peppy became ....

JEAN DUJARDIN 6
Impossible to rate as this was a silent movie part
Redandblack might be able to give ratings on silent movies .

BERENICE BEJO 8
Sensational , didn't have to talk
Very pretty gal , she is a breath of fresh air

JOHN GOODMAN 7
Fabulous actor
His part in the movie is Al Zimmer , well suited to a silent , Al Zimmer does not have to remember his lines !

The movie is lets say different
I managed to watch it , but silent movies are not my cup of tea
Given the movie a 5.5
Might me more or less for anyone else who has scene this very unusual production

The Big Steal (1990)

Ben Mendelsohn 9
Claudia Karvan 8
Steve Bisley 12/10

One of my all time favourite Aussie Movies was on ABC the night before last.  The Big Steal stars Mendelsohn as Danny Clarke, an 18 year old school boy who is in love with Jaguars and his classmate, Joanna Johnson (Karvan).
He buys a jaguar from Gordon Farkas (Bisley) and is ripped off in the process and then with his friends, sets about righting the wrong and winning back Joanna who he'd managed to annoy on their first date. Mendelsohn is brilliant as the shy but smart and funny Danny, Karvan is good but isn't dealt any favours by the script which makes her pretty straight compared to the lines the others get. Bisley is outstanding as Gordon Farkas, the highly polished conman who sells the car.

I love movies that have quotes that you remember and this movie has them in spades!! Two thumbs up!!

8.8 THE BIG STEAL
Very good Australian movie
Claudia is gorgeous
Steve Bisley, a truckie before he was an actor, is a very under-rated actor

To have James Stewart, Peter Finch and Ernest Borgnine all in one movie = has to good.
Have to agree the original version was  better than the 2004 version

Yeah I loved this one too. Probably made me sit up and take notice of Claudia.
The ones that really steal (pun) the show are Danny's folks. Tai Chi in the garden in downtown Footscray? Unfortunately their cherished car wasn't to Danny's liking. Was it Chris Hayward that was his old man?

Agree, the parents were brilliant- had to look up the father- his name is Marshall Napier. He's had bit parts in a few things.

In an episode of Batman and Robin
What would happen if the Riddler ran over them with a steam roller ?
In the following episode they would be called Flatman and Ribbon
Oh Dear ...

8.3 TROUBLE WITH THE CURVE [2012]
8 Clint Eastwood
8 Amy Adams
7 Justin Timberlake
8 John Goodman

Eastwood is a baseball scout
Timberlake is baseball scout
Adams is a lawyer and the daughter of Eastwood
They are the three principle players in this moving flick
Eastwood to a few is considered past his time by fellow colleagues
Eastwood's eyesight is almost gone, but that does not stop the great man
Adams joins him on a scouting journey to sign the next number one draft pick , mainly out of fear for Eastwood's health
From that point you see the following combinations
Eastwood snubs Adams
Adams tries to win Eastwood's affection
Timberlake is more or less the third umpire for both

EASTWOOD
Be warned all Eastwood fans
Eastwood is not the tough guy as we associate with him
He looks  bit like Graham Cornes in this movie !
He is a real CLINT to Adams though, how could he to such a sweet face girl
The aging superstar acts very well

AMY ADAMS
She has the Tiffani Amber Thiessen look about her in her role
When she smiles in the film she is sweetness personified
When shes bitchy, nah, does not suit her
Pity Eastwood makes little effort to Make her day

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Seen him in other movies strikes me as expessionless at times
Plays a nice guy part and I think the Hugh Jackman or Brian Austin Green  bitsa[90210 getting a plug in this post] look a like is more suitable to being nice

JOHN GOODMAN
Has a mo and looks very David Boonish
This actor lives up to his name , say no more

Clint is one of the producers in this film
I'm wondering which one of the three scripted some of the tremendous lines given  mainly to Eastwood

Eastwood's lines included:

" I have a half a beer back at the bar, that wont argue with me."

" You're lucky to be alive."
" How old are you sonny?"
" I'm 28 "
" So how the hell would you know if I'm lucky to be alive."

" What are you blokes staring at? , I'm not a Pole dancer."

When this film was produced there was a real age symmetry
Eastwood is 82 years old
Adams is 28 years old
Eastwood is old enough to be her Grandad !

Enjoyable film , just brace yourself when seeing an aged Clint in the twilight of his career
