7.4 MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID [1953]
8.5 Esther Williams
8.8 Victor Mature
7.7 Walter Pidgeon

ANNETTE KELLERMAN
Williams stars as that amazing Australian Annette Kellerman
Kellerman was a swimming superstar and performer just after the turn of the 20th century
This movie depicts the life and times of Kellerman from a near crippled child , who recovered to become swimming sensation
Kellerman is famous and is acknowledged as  pioneering the first women's one piece bathing suits
She is also famous for being the first actress appearing nude on the screen in the 1916 silent but loud movie A Daughter Of Gods
What a woman , and I know the legend of Kellerman has impressed a certain 'Bay' supporter on this site

ESTHER WILLIAMS
What an actress
Her first on screen pash was from Mickey Rooney
Was also a real life star swimmer , who might have excelled in the Olympic Games , but for the world implicated interference of a certain Fuhrerious German person in the 1940's
Who better to portray Annette Kellerman but a fellow swimming movie star

VICTOR MATURE
The actor who lived in a tent for a few years until he got his break into movies
Plays a zooperb part as a entrepreneur starting with a crew that contained  a boxing kangaroo and a special TV dog
He becomes Kellerman's somewhat erratic and sometimes imMature entertainment manager
When I think Mature , I think of him as the real Italian Stallion , when he starred as the incredible hulk of Sampson in Sampson and Delilah [alongside that delectable screen sensation Hedy Lemarr]

WALTER PIDGEON
Needs no introduction , one of the screens most debonair sophisticated actors
Actors need to memorize lines
Walter and I have the same problem , we both have a bad habit of forgetting peoples names
When I cant remember a persons name in the music retail industry in Adelaide I called them Groover
Anyone else I cant remember the name, I call them Jack
Walter called everyone Joe
He is a pidgeon and I'm a birdbrain [oh dear that is a shocker]

LINE OF THE MOVIE
Mature and his sidekick the Doc come into Kellermans abode and this was said
MATURE : What smells so good?
WILLIAMS : I'm making Australian stew
DOC : Whats that ?
WILLIAMS : Same as Irish stew only the meats down under

Feel good movie , based on truish events ,

6.1 DARLING [1965]
8.2 Dirk Bogarde
7.1 Julie Christie

Dirk Bogarde a great actor of the times
Julie Christie if there is a prettier actress of the 1960s I've yet to see her

The one part of this movie that stood out
One of Christie's flings is with an Italian prince
When married she instantly became a Princess
In this movie her name was Dianna Scott

That means in this part Christie became Princess Diana in 1965
16 years before another Princess Diana emerged in real life

8.8 BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL [1965]
8.2 Lee Remick
8.7 Steve Mcqueen

Mcqueen is just a singer in a rock and roll band
He mimes some rollicky tunes
In his band is an almost 30 year guitarist
That guitarist had his first decent hit in the year of this movie called Universal Soldier
No it was not Donovan ,but another who covered the song
It was Glenn Campbell

Does anyone else think Steve Mcqueen and Paul Newman are similar in looks ?

No not really except for the blue eyes maybe.

BTW Towering Inferno was on TV a few weeks ago.
The first of the "mega action carnage" movies of the mid 70s.

Eg: Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, Airport, Midway etc

The special effects look very dated by today's standards. But it was a cracking adventure back then with a stellar cast. Must have cost them a packet. William Holden, Richard Chamberlain, Robert Wagner, Robert Vaughan, Fred Astaire, Jennifer Jones, Faye Dunnaway, OJ Simpson. Oh, and of course Paul Newman and Steve McQueen - The Architect and the Fire Chief.

Chambo Off To Work We Go wrote:BODY HEAT (1981) - 8.5

10 John Barry's music score
9 Kathleen Turner
8 William Hurt
7.5 Ted Danson
7 Mickey Rourke

So poor Bill is the schmuck lawyer who falls for the alluring and beautiful rich lady. Falls under her spell and bed sheets and this is where Kathleen excels in this movie.

The sex scenes would have looked a little b-grade if it weren't for John Barry's hauntingly erotic jazz score. I gave that 10 points.

More on John Barry in the music trivia thread.

Anyway back to the movie.

Hard to describe what happens without spoilers, suffice to say the sex-smitten pair do the nasty and a further heinous crime that unravels for the lawyer.

It is all set in a sizzling heatwave of Miami with most of the characters dripping in sweat and not just from the sex.

One thing that I noted that director seemed to labour over and that was the somewhat excessive preoccupation with cigarette smoking. Maybe this is the local pastime in 1980's Miami. And this was before Don Johnson hit town!

Anyway the movie can be summarised by 2 things;
1 Kathleen Turner's alluring nakedness
2 John Barry's musical score

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Wow what a movie
Taped it and saw it tonight

William Hurt with hair !
Hurt with an Errol Flynn look about him , the eyes especially
Turner and Hurt first do the seed on the floor
Turner is no cougar going for a mature man, I wonder if it hurt so good?
For his part he goes from sleazy Lawyer to a fitter and Turner

As for the film , has more twists than Chubby Checker
Turner looking sensational back in 1981 , and perhaps her best part as an actress

Ratings
8.5 Body Heat
8.2 Kathleen Turner
9.1 William Hurt
8.5 Ted Danson
8.0 Mickey Rourke

I didnt know it was Ted Danson until I saw who starred at movies end
He looked so different

Cheers

Windtalkers 2002.

U.S. Marines in WWII are assigned to protect Navajo Marines who use their native language as an unbreakable radio cypher in the brutal battle to take Saipan against the Japanese. The Navajo marines are not allowed to be captured alive by the Japanese in fear of breaking the code, based on true events.

Nicolas Cage
Adam Beach
Peter Stormare
Noah Emmerich

Not bad for those who like war movies with plenty of action.

I give him a 9/10...would have been 10/10 if not for the part he played where at times where he alone knocked of dozens of Japs in a matter of a few moments without getting shot himself, a little bit over the top but i don't mind watching most of his movies.

High Society was on the box yesterday.
Always loved that movie and not just because Grace Kelly was in it.
Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Ol' Satchmo would guarantee some musical star attention.

Added to it Cole Porter's timeless songs.

High Society was her last movie I think, before Prince Rainier swept Grace up to be a real princess instead of a celluloid one.

(refer Greatest Actors/Actresses thread for another conundrum re Grace Kelly).

HIGH SOCIETY 7.5

A simple but wonderful film with Kelly being wooed by the men in this flick
Love watching Frank and Bing movies

Celeste Holm was in this movie she scrubbed up well for an almost 40 year old
Celeste lived a much longer life than the very unfortunate Grace
Celeste passed away in 2012 aged 95

THE PARTY [9.5]

9 Peter Sellers (Hrundi V Bakshi)
8 Claudine Longet (Michelle Monet)
9 Steve Franken (Waiter)

This Blake Edwards movie of 1968 was basically a vehicle to allow Sellers to run amok with his "Clouseau-esk" brand of slapstick. Has a script which I understand is one of the shortest in Hollywood history as Sellers basically ad-libs his way through the scenes. It is only 56 pages of scene outline and the whole movie was shot in chronological sequence so that the whole cast and crew could keep up with what was happening.

So Sellers is an Indian actor (complete with the boot polish) on set of an Afghan location shoot. Without spoiling it, things don't go well and brings the shoot to a standstill - enough said!

Back in Hollywood, the Director wants him banned from the studio and gives the producer his name - Hrundi V Bakshi.

Unfortunately, he writes the name on the guest list of a party he is throwing at his house. So the good Mr Bakshi graciously accepts the invitation and turns up in his 3 wheeler Morgan (Cool car).

As was the case with the location shoot, Bakshi creates much unintended bedlam at the party. The ensuing riot is hilarious.

I actually like this movie better than all of the Pink Panther films. It is in that sort of comedy genre, but funnier I think.

The drunk Waiter, Levinson almost steals the show from Sellers. Steve Franken is the actor and nobody would really know of him. But he was in countless movies and TV shows up until his death in 2012.

I recommend this movie as a keeper (I bought in on DVD) and my lad (15 yr old) loves it.

I'll leave you with a few lines from the opening scene......

Director: Cut dammit! Cut! Mr Bakshi.
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Yes, Sir?
Director: Has it occurred to you that the period of our picture is 1878?
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Oh, yes indeed sir. I am well aware that that is the period of the film. 1878.
Director: Mr. Bakshi, are you also aware that in 1878 they weren't wearing underwater watches?
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Yes sir, I know that. They had not even been invented.
Director: Got the time?
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Yes, it's...
[looks at his underwater watch]
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Oh my God.

Director: You.
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Me?
Director: Yes, you. Get off of my set, and out of my picture. Off, off! You're washed up, you're finished! I'll see to it that you never make another movie again!
Hrundi V. Bakshi: Does that include television, sir?

LET NO MAN WRITE HIS EPITAPH 1960
What an all star cast
JAMES DARREN 9.2
SHELLEY WINTERS 7.5
BURL IVES 7.4
JEAN SEBERG 6.0
RICARDO MONTALBAN 8.1
JEANNE COOPER 7.3
ELLA FITZGERALD 8.5

Time tunnelled and set in Chicago in 1950
Nick Ramano [Darren] is like Humphrey he gets in all matters of strife
He has to constantly defend his deceased father , who fried died in the chair, and his mole mother [Winters]
One night he loses the plot , brother what a night it really was , 'the night Chicago died'

It might have been a provocative flick for the times
There was violence , robberies , assaults , drug use
And the best part, no foul language used throughout , just seriously good acting

Multi Skilling
Ella Fitzgerald proved she can act
James Darren proved he could sing

Get a hold of it mate.
If you're a Sellers / Blake Edwards fan, I reckon it is their best work.

Although known as an actress and singer, Claudine Longet's career still is overshadowed by being known as a former wife of Andy Williams as well as shooting boyfriend, ski legend Spider Sabich in 1976.

5.8 TRACKS [2013]
6.5 Mia Wasikowska

Based on the true story of Robyn Davidson , a gal that trekked about 1700 kms through the Australian deserts. in the 1970s
She more or less did this with a few camels and a dog

Predictable storyline
But the  movie is a genuine thought provoker

Davidson and Wasikowska worked together before be filmed by the SA Film Corporation
With that input, one would think that the film would be very accurate to how it happened
