7.6 CADDIE [1976]
8 Helen Morse
7 Jack Thompson
7 Jackie Weaver

Good Australian production
Film is set just after WW1 and into the depression years
The film settings were good, depicting what life might have been like in the times
Mrs Marsh [Morse] raises 2 kids without an old man , the film shows how tough it was.
You get to see the old red telephone boxes , milk carts , and even see the desolation of boozers when its last drinks at 6 !

HELEN MORSE
Plays a superb part as the struggling single mother
Morse is sweetness personified

JACK THOMPSON
The suave local SP Bookie
This is how he christened Mrs Marsh as Caddie when they first met
" You remind me of my car"
" Is that meant to be a compliment?"
" You got a lot in common, you and my Cadillac , beauty and class , so I'm calling you Caddie."
One might think that Mrs Marsh was named Caddie after her namesake Graham Marsh ....

JACKIE WEAVER
Still acting these days in American films
Plays as a barmaid, wow what an actress, she has stood the test of time

LYNETTE CURRAN
Lovely blonde form the Bellbird Soap days
She plays a small part in the film
I best remember her stark naked in the Alvin Purple movie !

Here's a couple of lines I enjoyed
" Here's to my wives and sweethearts, may they never meet"
" The best way to forget one man is in the arms of another.'

Interesting film, albiet a bit slow paced at times
Worth a look

9.1 TIME MACHINE [1960]
8 Rod Taylor
7 Yvette Mimieux
7 Alan Young
7 Sebastian Cabot
7 Whit Bissell

Superb production
Set in 31/12/1899 Rod Taylor has a time machine
He tries to convince some colleagues of time travel, but no one takes him seriously
Wells he does travel through time , stopping a few times in the 20th century
He should have stopped in the year 2525 , but goes beyond to 820701 ...

ROD TAYLOR [8]
There were 3 popular Rods in the 60's
Rod Taylor , Fishing Rod, Rod Laver
Was the right sort of actor to play the inquisitive George Wells , wells it was before Guy Pearce's time when this movie was produced

YVETTE MIMIUEX [7]
Was still a teenager when she played a vivacious but naive part
Her name in the film was interesting, called Weena
Plays her part in the year 802701

ALAN YOUNG [7]
Taylor's best pal , is the most supportive of the unbelievers
If Taylor stopped in 1961 he would have first seen Alan Young star as Wilbur Post in the TV classic Mr Ed

SEBASTIAN CABOT [7]
Lookalike of the Tenor Pavarotti and  John Rhys Davies , the professor in the TV show Sliders, a show also featuring a sort of time travel
Plays the part of a Doctor , who wont buy into time travel
If Taylor stopped in 1966 he would have seen Cabot in the TC show Family Affair

WHIT BISSELL [7]
Another doubter of time travel
But he learnt his lesson 6 years later in 1966
Whit used to track the progress of Tony Newman and Doug Phillips in the cult TV series The Time Tunnel
If Taylor stopped by in 1966 to overlook this show he would have had a great time , time and time again

Rod Taylor produces a line that sums up this movie
"At last I have found paradise
But it would be no paradise if it belonged to me alone."

Nice movie , worth watching , I've seen it several Times
You have probably seen it as wells

great film The Time Machine & the special effects used back then were outstanding, there is also a very strong message in it....off course for those that don't know Rod Taylor is an Australian & the Morlocks versus  Eloi after Rod got The Morlocks fighting back rather just being lambs to the slaughter as they were as the Eloi were cannibals 'breeding' Morlocks (humans)

Whit Bissell is one of my all time favourite character actors, had a part in the classic sci fi film ''The Creature From The Black Lagoon''

was on foxtel only last week

off course Alan Young played three parts in this movie (three generations)

What was the better movie version of The Time Machine ?
1960 with Rod Taylor
2002 with Guy Pearce

Ironically both Rod and Guy did a chunk of acting in Australia
I preferred the 1960 version slightly more

both very good films but i usually think the original is better which i do in this case....that's an interesting point both main characters played by Australians

Alan Young had a cameo roll in the 2002 version

6.2 LORD OF WAR [2005]
8 Nicholas Cage
7 Jared Leto
7 Ethan Hawke
6 Bridget Moynahan

A movie based on real events
The world of illegal arms dealing
If this is how it happens , its disturbing to say the least

NICK CAGE 8
Plays the part of a nothing then becomes a hot shot Harms dealer
To have this profile means being confident brash and cagey
Nick displays all those qualoties in this role

JARED LETO 7
Nicks assistant, and brother

ETHAN HAWKE 7
Pursues Cage relentlessly

6 BRIDGET MOYNAHAN
Cage's wife

If you see this film , one of the African leaders looks like Sri Lanka's Murali !

Some memorable lines

CAGE
That's the trouble with falling in love with a dream girl , they have a habit of becoming real

OFFICER
Told him to have intercourse with himself

CAGE
I don't want to be remembered at all , if it means I'm being remembered it means I'm dead

Don't know if I can recommend this film
But FWIW its an education , and it stars the brilliant Cage

7.5 BLOWUP [1966]
7 David Hemmings
7 Venessa Redgrave
7 Jane Birkin
8 Gillian Hills

Strange strange movie
Movie depicting the times of the singing 60s in London
Its all about David Hemmings, the fashion photographer
On face value it appears there was no script writers for this movie
It was a silent movie in parts

DAVID HEMMINGS
Saw Hemming's in a movie Alfred The Great , and acted well for the part
But in Blowup, you could blow up his part at times
The baby faced actor with a  bowl fringed hairdo with a voice that sounds at times Richard Burtonesque
He meanders from scene to scene sometimes weird sometimes frenetic and often in a world of his own
His part is at times hard to describe

VENESSA REDGRAVE
Almost 30 years old in her part , acts well, looks the goods , and lovable

JANE BIRKIN
Jane wow !
She would be about 19 in this movie
Plays a naughty girl
She looks adorable
She matures into a very very good looking lady in later movies

GILLIAN HILLS
Stunning looker
Naughty part as well
Brings a breath of fresh air into this movie

YARDBIRDS
If not for the Beatles may have been rated as the best British band of the 60's
They play that great song Stroll On
You see Jeff Beck , you see Jimmy Page on their guitars
You see pretty boy Keith Rilf singing this magnificent song
I had not known that the Yardbirds would feature on this movie
But its the highlight of the film for me
I have mentioned its a strange movie
Well when you see the Yardbirds strumming away with Stroll on
You see a motionless spellbound young crowd watching them in a club
It should be an uncontrollable crowd , that's what I mean about strange

I guess you have to see this film
It could rate a 2.5 for the discerning
It could rate 9 + for others
The birds and the Yardbirds are reason to see it

I was too young to remember the swinging 60's
Seeing the 60's in this movie wets my appetite
I wish I could have partied in the 60's
But then again, I would be Redandblack's age if I did party back then !

5.8 DISTURBIA [2007]

Shia LaBeou is serving home detention
Spends his time being a peeping tom and pervert on his neighbors
He purves at Sarah Roemer [and who could blame him]
He also spies on David Morse , the good doctor from the 1980's TV series St Elsewhere  ....

Appearances
Roemer[8] she is so Jennifer Biel like in appearance
LaBeouf[7] looks like a young Steve Silvagni
Morse[5] looks like Billy Brownless but with more hair !

PS
Whenever lovely Sarah appears radiantly in perfumery, is it a case of :
Is Sarah Roemer in the room?

watched a film last night well just after midnight this morning on ABC1 & it was an Australian film i had never heard of called ''Shame'' it starred Deborra-Lee Furness as a barrister on holidays & i thought she was outstanding & i googled her name as i'd never heard of her & she is married to Hugh Jackman & a young Simone Buchanan as a gang rape victim

the basic plot is the girls in the town (country W.A town called Toodyay) have been gang raped by a group of local youths & because of the stigma it is the girls fault as they ask for it & are sluts & so on

the barrister comes in & in time divides the town

sad twist at the end of the film & hopefully this type of thing doesn't happen anymore

worth watching, it makes you think & would be a very good film for young men to watch for an insight to the ''other side''

rating 9/10

7.5 THE GUARDIAN (2006)

8 Kevin Costner
7 Ashton Kutcher

This is a "Top Gun" meets an "Officer and a Gentleman" synopsis almost to a tee. However, the premise of this one is the training for the US Coast Guard service.

Costner is the old pro holding all the swim records and becomes the trainer of new recruits after the scars of a rescue gone wrong still haunt him.

Kutcher is the gun college swimmer with a bundle of swim records under his belt (or budgies) who wants to be a rescue swimmer. He's brash and cocky and Costner tries to harness his energy.

Costner is quite good as this character and well within his comfort zone. Maybe he'll do something one day that really extends his character range.

There is the obligatory love interest on the side for Kutcher to either hinder his training progress or provide redemption to his troubled past.

All in all, it is quite good and entertaining, but the fact that the synopsis / script is so close to the other 2 movies spoils it a bit. If you have lived under a rock and never seen Top Gun or Officer and a Gentleman, maybe it would offer better credibility.

Sometimes these stories get a bit tired when Hollywood keeps dusting off the same old premise.

Well worth a look, although I thought the ending was a little bit illogical.

9 THE TERMINAL (2004)
9 Tom Hanks ... Viktor Navorski
7.5 Catherine Zeta-Jones ... Amelia Warren
9 Stanley Tucci ... Frank Dixon
9.5 Kumar Pallana ... Gupta Rajan

This is a classic Spielberg offering.

Navorsky comes to America looking to collect the last signature of one of his dead father's Jazz Idols, Benny Golson. He keeps them in a tin peanut jar.

He arrives at JFK at the precise time that his country (Krakoshia) is in civil uprest with the government being government and the US not recognising its status. So they won't let him into the US as his visa is not recognised and they can't send him back into a war zone and so he must stay in the Terminal. It is maybe a bit implausible on this premise, but it sets the scene.

It is hoped that the matter will be sorted out in 24 hours or so and they give him food and telephone vouchers and send him on his way to negotiate the International Lounge.

Navorsky befriends a few of the interesting characters in the airport like Gupta, the resident cleaner. Gupta almost steals the show and without spoiling it, brings a Jumbo Jet to halt with his mop!

The whole movie is shot on a set specially built and made to look like an airport terminal.

Zeta-Jones is the (sort of) love interest, and after 9 months residency in the Terminal, and frustrating the hell out of the airport boss (Tucci, who is fantastic as the ambitious admininstrator), Navorsky gains a cult status among all the people whose daily lives weave in and out of the airport.

Will he get to meet Benny Golson? Will he be deported back to Krackoshia? Will he gain the affections of Amelia?

You have to watch it. It's one of my (and my 14 year old lad's) favourite movies.

Quirky, entertaining and interesting characters.

8.7 A TOWN LIKE ALICE [1956]
8 Peter Finch
9 Virginia Mckenna

British woman Mckenna goes to Malaya to help out a village in need of cleaner water
WW2 hots up, and the Japanese take over Malaya
Mckenna and a band of woman are ordered to walk around Malaya to seek a safe place , but they endlessly walk and walk and walk interluding into some gut wrenching scenes
Peter Finch is an Aussie who tries his best to assist these desolated women

There's a couple of 'reel' highlights
The women showering with glee , to see the expressions on their faces
Virginia Mckenna , a sweetheart , when she goes from tattered and torn to made up and so so pretty

I am a bit of a Nevil Shute fan and read a number of his books. Always wondered why more of them were not made into movies.

'A Town Like Alice' would be the most well known along with "On the Beach" which was made into a telemovie about 10 years ago with Bryan Brown in it.

I think they even did a remake of Alice, that had Bryan Brown in it.

It's a good story.

Song
A Town Like Malice
By The Jam

Fantastic song

Chambo
The song is linked to the Nevil Shute book
But Paul Weller , of the Jam, says it is about his home town of Woking

I missed the start, but watched most of 'The Picture Show Man' today.

Just a nice little bit of Australian whimsy, with all the well-known actors of the day (1977).

Great to see the wonderful John Meillion, along with Norman Gu...., I mean Gary McDonald and a young Harold Hopkins, as well as Rod Taylor. Some nice women, too, but unlike Scrappy, I'll have to Google to find out who they are.

Nice, easy viewing.

7.5 MURDER IN THE FIRST [1995]
7 Kevin Bacon
8 Christian Slater

Bacon,17 years old, was caught pinching $5 from a store
He had to, to have money for him and his sister, both parentless
Bacon makes an unsuccessful break from jail
You simply don't do that to Warden Glenn
Glenn gives Bacon a very tough penalty, confinement for 3 years.
Watch for Judge Clawson, sporting the Mel Brock hairdo of the 40's.

Interesting to read that during a courtroom scene that there was a earthquake , causing production to slow down
Unlike San Francisco to have a quake !

I was in San Francisco the previous decade
On the first night the bed started rocking , I passed it as a possible earthquake , 2 days later I read there was a 4.3 quake , which made the local news on about page 10 !
No one talked about the quake

I became mates with a local the next day, he took me to Alcatraz
I bought him a few beers later
Later that night I asked him what he did for a living
He replied that he was unemployed and just released from jail for murder !

My next visit to Alcatraz was the early 90's
I met a former inmate of the Traz that was selling his book there
He was known as Whitey , and old fella with silver hair
I read his book on the insights of prison life in Alcatraz a few times in my travels

The movie, whilst predictable , is worth a look

7.2 CAPE FEAR [1962]
7 Gregory Peck
8 Robert Mitcham
8 Barrie Chase

Mitcham did a bad bad bad thing
Lawyer Peck witnesses this misdemeanor
Mitcham gets 8 years jail
Mitcham is out of jail , a slight lookalike of fast bowler Geoffrey Lawson, seeks revenge , and makes hell for Peck

So its head to head
Two of the screen greats the impeckable Peck V the Bad Bad Mitcham
Can Peck Lower Mitcham ?

There are 2 notable things in this film
Mitcham topless, surprise surprise
Barrie Chase the droolable, the delectable , the voluptous screen beauty
She is scene in a skimpy bedroom outfit , far more attracting than the topless Mitcham

Probably need to be a Peck or Mitcham fan to watch this
Or to see Barrie Chase !

9.3 MILLION DOLLAR BABY [2004]
8.5 Clint Eastwood
9.2 Hillary Swank
8.1 Morgan Freeman

Eastwood runs a boxing  gym
Freeman works for him
Swank is 30+ year old with no fighting experience who wants to be the boxing champ

Eastwood who has the Graham Cornes look about him rejects her at first but is gradually impressed with her steely determination
Hillary then begins the Everest   ....
What follows turns into a truly memorable story line

Hilary plays some rather demanding roles in her career
Included is the movie Boys Don't Cry where she plays a tranny
This time shes a female boxer , and wow

8.7 PRIVATE PARTS [1997]
8.5 Howard Stern

Very funny movie about American Shock Jock Howard Stern
Based on the true story of Stern , played by himself
Stern goes from zero to hero and then see what happens ....
When he steps into a DJ booth its white line fever
He has a voice very similar to Alan Alda and the hairdo of Tiny Tim

Watch out for Gloria [Carol Alt] a stunner he meets on a flight , yumbo

There is a cameo from  ACDC in the film

I found the movie hilarious
If this movie is close to the mark, depicting Stern , then what a buzz he must be
He is the American version of Adelaide's Bob Francis

7.2 NIGHT OF THE IGUANA [1964]
6 Richard Burton
7 Deborah Kerr
9 Ava Gardner
7 Sue Lyon

Burton goes form Priest to Tour Guide
The tourists have agendas with the vociferous Burton
Ava Gardner runs a run down Motel
Deborah Kerr plays a goody 2 shoes part
Sue Lyon a delectable provoking naughty teenage girl

Might have abandoned watching the film but for some splendid acting by Ava Gardner

This is a line directed at a bitchy tourist , Grayson Hall , by Ava Gardner
" Your gambling with your front teeth."

She does look very pleasant to the eye in the skimpy dress she parades in Logan's Run
There's something about Jenny, she is not what you call out and out stunning
A way to describe her, would be to say she is delectable

8.2 WALKABOUT
Missed the first 15 minutes
Jenny appeared starkers in this flick a few times
She would not have been Redgum of age in this , she was only 18

Might have struggled for actors , the boy in the film is the Directors son
So much so , with a limited budget, that perhaps Johnny Haysman was overlooked

Reminded me a bit of the cult Aussie flick Jedda starring Ngarla Kunoth
Thank Goodness she was named Nagala and not Farrah
