NEIL KERLEY
These snippets from an interview on channel 7 involving Tim Ginever, Mark Soderstrom and Neil Kerley
Neil Kerley has been inducted into the SA Sport Hall Of Fame
Knuckles was asked about great players he has been associated with

" John Sandland now theres a bloke who had more ability than he thought he had

Peter Marker was special for me

A bloke by the name of Kerry Hamilton from Loxton who in my opinion way back then was the best centre man in the state, they say Russell[Ebert] well yeah, but Kerry could handle Russell

Peter Darley was an out and out champion

David Kantilla , big boy...I would get more meaning out of talking to a telegraph pole, than talking to David, he just did not want to know about , he just wanted to go out there and have fun, and in the 64 premiership he certainly did, he kicked 5 goals from a forward pocket

Alfie Skuse, I loved Alfie, no one could catch Alfie,I called him shotgun because most of the time his score would be about 1 goal 5, he was a super kid

Peter Carey was a special out and out champion, 440 odd games, left the field once in that entire innings, not a bad effort."

Some great names and yarns

R.I.P.
Robert Oatey
17/9/2019
1961-1973 [Norwood]
1974-1978 [Sturt]

When I first starting attending NW matches, Robert Oatey was the coach at the time
My memories were of a strong robust rover , a handball expert , and a goal sneak
He transformed the NW football club from wooden spooners to finalists as coach
It might have been a blow to be replaced as coach by Bob Hammond in 1974 as coach
Ends up a win win of sorts for the 2 Bobs
Robert Oatey was a member of the 1974 Sturt Premiership team
Bob Hammond went on to Coach 2 NW flags in 1975 and 1978
The irony is that NW beat ST for the 1978 title

From memory
There was one season that Robert Oatey badly injured his leg[ knee ?]
He was to miss the rest or most of the season
He returned in about 3-4 weeks !

I can add that having talked to players who played under Robert Oatey , that he was a great educator of football players , a teacher of skills , most prob influenced by his father Jack Oatey, who was having great success with Sturt in mid/late 1960s

I consider the legacy of Robert Oatey some 50 + years ago , has continued ever since
Norwood has been a remarkably consistently good team, to present day
Whilst he didnt win a flag at NW, he was the catalyst for later successes

Would have been interesting discussions over dinner the weeks Norwood played the Blues in the late 60s early 70s with both Oateys in control of those clubs.

Must have been hard for Robert watching that Sturt period up to 1970.
I recall he was a school teacher at Pembroke?
